10 Reasons Platform Scales are Essential for Warehouses
Weighing incoming and outgoing goods is essential in warehouses for safety, regulation, cost, and operation. If the scale is inaccurate it can lead to incorrect invoicing, customer complaints, non-compliance with regulations, overloaded vehicles, safety problems, productivity issues and more.
Platform scales are the best-selling type of warehouse scale – ideal for dispatch areas due to their high-quality components, heavy duty build, and high capacities.
Even in the most challenging of conditions, platform scales provide accurate readings, so there are no discrepancies between the stated weight of the item and the actual weight. But why are platform scales so crucial to warehouses? This blog post explains.
What is a platform scale?
A platform scale is a durable, reliable and accurate weighing platform which can be used for many weighing (and counting) functions – potentially reducing the amount of money which a warehouse manager may need to spend on equipment. Because they are a large, flat surface, weighing processes are made easier.
Why is a platform scale essential for warehouses?
Accurate weighing is essential in warehouses in order to meet regulations and satisfy customers. A platform scale is a highly accurate way to measure warehouse goods, as typically platforms weigh in increments as accurate as 0.2kg.
Any warehouse scale needs to be durable and able to last through heavy use, but due to the role a platform scale plays in a warehouse, this type of scale needs to be even more robust. A solid and durable platform scale constructed from high quality components – either mild steel or stainless steel – will survive heavy duty weighing, down-in, down-out, for a long time.
3. Can easily weigh oversized loads
Platform scales will usually have a large base size and high capacity so are suited to weighing oversized items. Standard, off the shelf platform scales have base dimensions up to 1500mm2 and capacities up to 3 tonnes, so are perfectly suited for weighing the largest of outgoing goods. Many weighing companies will be able to provide much larger platform scales, tailored to the needs of the warehouse.
4. Easy to load
Warehouses can benefit from easy loading by using a platform scale due to the scale’s low profile structure. This means the platform scale can be easily loaded either by hand or fork truck, plus if ramps are fitted items can be wheeled onto the scale.
Platform scales are built with versatility in mind. They can be either mild steel or stainless steel. The latter is known for being hard wearing and resistant to corrosion, so can withstand regular use in harsh environments. Platform scales are powered by rechargeable battery so can be used anywhere in the warehouse.
6. Print out weight data
Certain platform scales are fitted with an RS232 port. This means a printer can be added, so instead of losing the weight data after use or having to write it down with a pen and paper, this option allows the reading to be printed onto permanent hard copy.
7. Transfer data straight to a PC
Alternatively, the RS232 port can be used to connect the scale directly to a computer, and the weight data can automatically fill an Excel spreadsheet. Using a digital system saves paper and space, and means that internal staff or Trading Standards can access records when needed.
Meeting weight requirements is essential in order to comply with regulations – such as those in place on overloaded vehicles. An overloaded vehicle caused by inaccurate weights can mean that the vehicle is unsafe and can result in heavy penalties.
A SOLAS regulation was also introduced in 2016 which required any goods being shipped overseas to carry a verified proof of weight, to help to ensure the safety of the vessel. A verified weigher can use a highly accurate, Trade Approved platform scale to gather this reading.
9. Easy to operate
It is important to choose a platform scale with an indicator which is right for you. If you choose a scale with the right indicator, operation is straightforward with many easy to use functions – whether you need a scale that weighs, counts or something more sophisticated.
By choosing a stainless steel platform scale, it can function effectively in harsh environments – this is due to the scale’s IP rating which means the scale has a certain degree of water resistance. A scale which is IP67 or IP68 can be washed down to keep it hygienic.
